When I’m on a patio with friends being tormented by bees, one of my favourite stories to tell is the origin of my irrational fear of bees and wasps. Remind me to tell you when we are sitting on a patio swatting bees. It is kinda gross so I want to see your reaction.
I understand the difference between bees and wasps. I think it is cool when people have urban hives because bees are kind of an important part of our ecosystem/world. Honey on its own is kinda gross, but it is a good, healthy alternative to refined sugar.
Usually when I see a flying insect that’s black and yellow and looks like it has a stinger I will bolt, if possible, or freeze and clam up mid-whatever I’m doing. It is pretty admittedly dramatic but what if it stings me! (I’ve never been stung!)
Yesterday, I was trying to read my book (ZZ Packer’s Drinking Coffee Elsewhere) on the grass in the park and this little dude started sniffing the marigold buds around me. Distracted by his droopy little stinger - there was no more reading after that - all I could do was stare and then I decided to take this photo which is probably the closest my hand has willingly come to a bee.
Enter Monique to tell us all about why being scared of bees is ridiculous! It is good to have entomologist friends.
